London, May 4 The Government intend to introduce a Bill giving authority to borrow money on the security of the Suez Canal shares, and the amount so borrowed will be expended on the defence of the coaling stations. THE REPORTED FAILURES AT BUENOS AYRES. London, May 4. The British Ambassador at the Argentine Republic denies the reported failure of several banks at Buenos Ayres. ENGLAND, GERMANY, AND RUSSIA. Vienna, May 5. The local press declare that German sympathy is increasing towards England, and decreasing towards Russia. O'BRIENS SENTENCE. London, May 4, Mr. O'Brien, M.P., has appealed against the last sentence of three months' imprisonment imposed on him for taking part in a proclaimed meeting. THE LATE MR. CHESSON. London, May 5. The remains of the late Mr. Chesson, the chairman of the Aborigines' Protection Association, were interred in the Brompton cemetery to-day. The funeral was attended by several members of Parliament and other leading citizens.
ASSAULTING AN EDITOR. Berlin, May 5. A deputy named Schoener has been sent to gaol for four mont hs for assaulting the editor of the Tagblatt, who published erroneous and incorrect reports of the death of the late Emperor of Germany. THE IMPERIAL INSTITUTE. London, May 5. The principal foundations for the building of the Imperial Institute have been completed, and tenders are now being called for erecting the building. CARDINAL MANNING AND THE PEERAGE. London, May 5. The Tablet states that Cardinal Manning will probably be offered a life peerage. THE AUSTRALIAN CRICKETERS. London, May 4. The cricketers of Surrey County have entertained the Australian cricketers ati a banquet. THE CARNARVON-PARNELL INTERVIEW. London, May 4 In a speech in the House of Lords, Lord Carnarvon, referring to his interview with Mr. Parnell on Home Rule, reproached himself for conducting that interview in the absence of witnesses. MOUNT ETNA IN ERUPTION. Rome, May 5. Mount Etna is in active eruption.
