THE NEW HEBRIDES QUESTION. Sydney, May 5. The Dives, French warship, has arrived here, and leaves shortly for the New Hebrides, where she joins the warship Decres. The captain of the latter vessel represents France, and Captain Clayton, of 11.M.5. Diamond, Britain, on the commission to administer the affairs of the group. H.M.s. Calliope is also with the Diamond.
THE QUEENSLAND ELECTIONS. Brisbane, May G. Both Sir Thomas Mcllwraith and Sir Samuel Griffiths have been elected.
THE WAIRARAPA.
Sydney, May 6. Arrived : The Wairarapa, from New Zealand. The racehorses, Tetford and Cinderella, from Auckland, have arrived in good condition.
CANADA AND THE COLONIES. Sydney, May 5. The Pacific-Canadian Railway authorises will shortly begin negotiations with the Australasian Governments in connection with the Pacific-Canadian route as a means of communication with these colonies. COLONIAL DEFENCES. Melbourne, May 5. All the Australian colonies, with the exception of New South Wales, have agreed to unite to secure the services of Imperial officers to advise on colonial defences. RABBIT EXTERMINATION. Sydney, May 5. Drs. Butcher's and Ellis's experiments in rabbit extermination at Tintinallony have proved successful. The portion of land fenced in for the purposes of the experiment was infested with rabbits, but has now been entirely cleared. SHIPPING. Sydney, May 5. Arrived : Pactole, from Lyttelton ; Jessie, from Whangaroa : Pukaki, from the Bluff.
