THE RABBIT CONFERENCE. Sydney, April 23. Me. Bell, the representative of New Zealand, arrived here to-day, and took his seat at the Rabbit Conference, which was occupied all day discussing the question of a suitable site on which to conduct the experiments. Ultimately it was decided that Taralla Station, near Wilcannia, should be secured, and experiments with M. Pasteur's scheme of microbes be conducted there.

FEDERAL QUARANTINE. Melbourne, April 23. The Chief Secretary states that it is unlikely negotiations- for the establishment of federal quarantine will succeed, as the Governments of the different colonies cannot agree on the apportionment of expenses. POLICE PROCEEDINGS AGAINST PUGILISTS. Melbourne, April 23. The police are taking proceedings against Boland and Carroll, who fought for the light weight championship on Saturday.

DEATH OF DR. HEARN. Melbourne, April 23. The death is announced of Dr. Hearn, member of the Legislative Council, and Dean of the Faculty of Law at the Melbourne University. PHYLLOXERA. Adelaide, April 23. The Government have urgently impressed upon the New South Wales Government the necessity of taking immediate and effective steps to stamp out the phylloxera, which was recently reported as having broken out in that colony. THE MINING INDUSTRY. Adelaide, April 23. There has been a large development in the mining industry during the last fifteen months. In this city 21 new companies were registered, with nominal capital of five and a half million pounds. h.m.s7thalia. Sydney, April 23. . H.M. troopship Thalia, with relief men from the Australian station, sailed for Plymouth to-day. DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. Sydney, April 23. A fire at Gunnedah, 250 miles from Sydney, destroyed eight buildings, including the barracks of the Salvation Army. : THE CHINESE QUESTION. Sydney, April 23.
