WAIKATO CHARITABLE AID.
[BY telegraph.— correspondent.] Hamilton, Monday. A communication, very important in its matter to the Waikato district, has been received by the Thames District Charitable Aid Board from the Premier's Office. It will be remembered that the four Waikato counties, and the boroughs of Hamilton and Cambridge, though separated from the Auckland and Thames Boards, would, it was supposed, have to contribute until the 31st March next. This, however, appears not to be the case, for the telegram referred to, from the Premier's office, states that after consideration the Government were of opinion that the Piako County is not liable to contribute to the Thames Hospital and Charitable Aid Board after its separation, but they would at once deduct and pay to the Board the Piako County's proportion of contributions due to the date of the new act coming into force, nearly £542 altogether. The same rule will, of course, apply to the Waikato, Waipa, and Raglan Counties, and to the two Boroughs, and under the circumstances it will not be worth while to make a* test case, as arranged at the last meeting of delegates, but pay up to the middle of August last, as the liability ceases at that date. As, however, the Waikato and Piako districts have ceased to be liable, and have therefore ceased to exercise any claim on the Auckland and Thames boards, it will be their immediate duty to make the necessary arrangements for providing for their own sick and poor, a duty which, if they were not prepared to carry out, they were not justified in seeking separation from those who did provide it.
