THE PILOT SERVICE.
TO THE EDITOR. Bib,— Harbour Board have made great changes in the pilot service of this port, mad have allowed the direot control of the pilot service to pass out of their control into the hands of a private oompany. It is also intended to grant the said company a complete monopoly of the service. I would ask, sir, ia it wise to create a monopoly of this sort Does any business which is monopo* Used by one individual or company serve the public as well as if there were a reasonable amount of opposition ? Experience proves to the contrary. To ensure an efficient pilot' service I would suggest that the Harbour Board encourage men who have or can qualify themselves as pilots to act as such by granting the necessary certificate, and allow a email subsidy to those who aro properly provided with suitable boats and equipments.—l am, &0,, Nacuoal,
