TE KOPURU.

The first anniversary of the Te Kopuru Band of Hope was held in the Kopuru Hall on Friday, May 14, and was a great success. The programme consisted of a service of song, "The Babes in the Basket." The choir numbered about 20 voices. Master F. Matthews presided efficiently at the harmonium. Mr. W. J. Philips acted as conductor, and, from the way in which the singing was rendered, seemed to be well qualified for his post. The principal soloists were Mesdameß Molloy, Conn ell, Philips, Mr. and Miss Philips, and Mr. Henich. The solos were generally well rendered, particularly those by Mrs. Connell, who possesses a fine voice. Mrs. Molloy also rendered good services. The readings were given by Mr. Barclay (president) in a clear, distinct, and effective manner. The choruses were rendered in excellent style. Recitations were given by Master Frank Molloy and Miss Philips. At the conclusion of the piece, Mr, Barclay spoke a few earnest and vigorous words on temperance. He said the society had been kept well in funds, and at the present had a balance of over £2 in hand, to which the evening's entertainment would no doubt add several more. Mr. E. C. Carr, of Aratapu, complimented the society on having such an earnest and vigorous teetotaller at its head, who might almost be dignified with the name of enthusiast or fanatic. Mr. Barclay thanked their Aratapu friends for help they had so willingly given them in their hour of need. A vote of thanks was passed by acclamation to the choir for their services, and the singing of the National Anthem brought the proceedings to a close. The room was then cleared for dancing.—.
