LAND AND DEPRESSION.

TO THIS EDITOB, Sir, —I think, at this junoture, the Govern. meet should encourage the occupation of the Crown lands by offering every alternate farm section (as now or hereafter subdivided) to such settlers as will take up the same under the existing homestead regulations. By doing so the homesteader would improve the adjoining section, which adjoining section the Government could sell, as the demand arosa, at an enhanced value. Land monopoly would also be prevented by thus parcelling out our Crown lands. With regard to cheap transit, I think the Government should open up the Waikato distriot to the benfits of cheap transit by cutting the Waiuku canal, thna enabling the Waipa and Waikato settlers to land their produce at cheap rates close to our city. Ido not think it reasonable to expect cheap transit over our narrow-guaga railways.—l am, &c. Peter Oliphant.
