[press ASSOCIATION.] REEFTON, Friday. Shortly after eleven o'clock last night, a fire broke out in an unoccupied house at the corner of Broadway and Bridge Streets. Another building adjoining was partially destroyed. The building in which the fire broke out was uninsured. The origin of the fire is a mystery. The police on bursting in found the ceiling on fire. A miner named Hugh Bregnan, for seme time past engaged about the Welcome bat* tery, was found hanging by the neck in the house on Thursday morning last. The deceased slept in the battery house. The suicide appeared to have been planned with great deliberation, the rope being well oiled to ensure the '"not slipping. .. CHRiSTOHURC'H, Friday. The body of Police Sergeant Brooks' child who was reported missing some day* ago, was found washed up on Akaroa beach today. Mr. Charles Clark sold by auction to-day the premises of Messrs. W. Montgomery and Co., 80 feet frontage to Tuam-atreet and 100 feet to Colombo-street, for £8000. They were bought by Mr. F. E. Wright for Mr. W. Montgomery, who has been out of the firm for some time. TIMARU, Friday: A man named Denis Twohey wai found in the park at Temnka this morning with his throat badly cut. A razor was found near him. He was brought in to the Hospital, where he lies in a precarious condition. It is supposed to be a case of attempted suicide. The first direct shipment of wool to Ant* werp waa forwarded to-day from Timaru, for transhipment to the Arawa. It is a purchase by M. de Havven, the Belgian commissioner. DUNEDIN, Friday. In. tii; Newthorn murder case the jury found tae three prisoners guilty of man* slaughter. Judge Williams said he agreed v/ith tha verdict, r.ud sentenced White and Crowley to five years ea-'h, and Fitzgerald to three years.
