GISBOKNE, Thursday. Three skeletons, one with a bnilet hole in the skull, have been found at Tolago Bay, and are supposed to be those of Maoris killed in Te Kooti'a raid.
A large native college i« to be built here at a cost of £1400.
Major Ropata has written to the Govern, ment, declining to receive the reduced pension of £100 a year.
NAPIER, Thur«day. A decision of some, importance was delivered by Judge Brookfield in the Native Lands Court to-day.. Some native grantees of the Kaokoaroa Block applied to the Court, under the Act of 1869. to determine the value of their shares. The Court held that the Act of 18S0, constituting the new Land Court, practically displaced the Act of 1869, and that the Court could only undertake to take evidence in such cases when directed to do so by order, of the Supreme Court. The first brown trout taken in Hawke's Bay was exhibited to-day.
NELSON, Thursday. Mr. George Hooper, of the firm of Hooper and Dodscn, brewers, died this morning, aged 78 years. He arrived at Nelson in tbe ship William Harrison in 1842, and a year later started business as a brewer, at which, till hie death, he had been actively engaged. The deceased was seized with a fit on Toesday morning, from which lie never recovered.
CHRISTOH DP.CH, Thursday. The Premier has arranged to meet a deputation from the Chamber of Commerce and other public bodies re ths railway tariff, at three p.m. on Saturday ii?xt.
OWAKE, Thursday. The Owake powder mill, incorporating mill exploded again' last evening at five p.m., the mill-keeper getting rather severely burned, , " . . ■
OAMARU, Thursday. At a meeting of farmers the following resolution was carried :—" That this meetingresolveto adhere to the system previously followed of selling grain with bags extra.". . A stack of oats valued at £60 was destroyed by fire this morning at Totara. ■■'■-■
