The finish was one of the moat excitiog of the day, Agent winning by barely half a neck.

Vanguard and Salvage were scratched; Betting'; 3 to 2 against Tasman and Nonsense," 5 to 1 Lady Emma, 8 to 10 to 1 the rest. After three false starts the lot were sent away splendidly. Lady Emma and Nensensa at , once showed the way, making the pace very warm indeed. On entering the straight the lot might easily have been covered with a sheet,'bat before passing the judge's stand they opened out a little. Passing the stand the order was : Nonsense, Tasman, Lady Emma, Sou'-wester, Hippo; Ike, and The Poet. At thebaokof the course Hippo improved her position a little, and on reaching the north-west corner was on even terms with the leaders. Tasman, who had all along been kept in hand, was called on at the bend, and assuming the lead came' along the straight at a clipping pace. The whip was put on him on nearing the post, as it was also on Sou'-weater and Lady Emma, and- a gallant struggle home took place, Tasman just winniog by half a length from Sou'-wester, Lady Emma finishing an excellent third. Nonsense, who at terms was fairly beaten, came in an indifferent fourth, Hippodamia fifth, The Poet sixth,' and Ike last. Time, 3mine. 12£secs. .
