NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday. The charge against Boswell, for stealing cheques belonging to the Lighter Company, occupied the Court all day, when the magistrate dismissed it without comment. Two othur charges are to be heard next Friday.

HAWERA, Friday. In reference to native reserves leases 100 tenders have been received for 40 sections. The average price is not obtainable yet, but tenders are regarded as moderate. _ Compaction was mostly for the Okaiawao leases on the Titokowaru land.

WANGANUI, Friday. Aropeta, the Muriinotu native, was brought before the Resident Magistrate to-day, and remanded till Monday on the application of the solicitor fbr the defence, on a charge of stealing a theodolite, value £25, the property of Mr. J. A. Thorp, surveyer. Aropeta was liberated on bail, himself in £500, and two sureties, Colonel McDonnell and Kemp, of £250 each.

WELLINGTON, Friday. At the Magistrate's Court, E. Mullens was charged with setting fire to his house at Tawa Flat, with intent to defraud the Insurance Company. The evidence disclosed so far is circumstantial, and is to the effect that the accused offered a person resident in the district a sum of money to burn the house down. A person riding a horse, answering to the description of the one owned by the accoscd, was seen passing through the streets on the morning of the tire. Fourteen men were in the house when the fire was discovered, but they escaped by means of the chimney. The accused was further remanded until Tuesday, bail being allowed, himself in £400, and two sureties of £200 each. At the next meeting of the New Zealand Rifle Association in Auckland, the amount of prize money will be from £500 to £600. This is less than half the amount given last year. The meeting takes place in February next. The lonic will take 5000 carcases of frozen mutton from here, and the Triumph about 4000. It is intended, if possible, to hold a large volunteer review here in Easter. The colonel in command of the district will wait on the Defence Minister on his return from Kawhia, to ascertain what assistance may be received from the Government. GREYMOUTH, Friday. The Btore of John Hughes, at Rutherglen, was burned down, and next to nothing was saved. It was insured for £475 on the stock and building, in two policies of £200 and £275, in the Imperial and Victoria. TIMARU, Friday. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, a charge of assault, brought against Captain Smith, of the Salvation Army, by James Graham, was dismissed, Smith having already been fined for committing a breach of the peace. A man oamed T. Millard, a veterinary surgeon, was killed by a fall from a horse near Geraldine last evening. Tho annual balance-sheet of the Canterbury Farmers' Association, Timaru, just issued to the shareholders, showß a net profit on the year ended September 20th, 1883, of 26J P e r cent, on the average paid-up capital. The amount of assets over liabilities ; is stated at £14,904. ! DUNEDIN, Friday. At the Supreme Court to-day Walter Joseph Newton, who was accused of;burning a quantity of books and papers, the property of the West Harbour Borough Council, of which he was Town Clerk, was found guilty. His Honor held that the evidence showed the prisoner fancied he had been wronged by the corporation which had discharged him, and had committed an unwarrantable though unpremeditated act. The prisoner was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
