CONSERVATIVE VICTORY. London, October 4. An election took place to-day at Manchester of a member for the House of Commons in the room of Hugh Birley, deceased. Mr. Holdsworth, a Conservative, was placed at the head of the poll, defeating the Radical candidate by an immense Mr. Lankhurst,'Liberal, had announced his candidature, 'but at the last moment abstained from going to the poll.

LONDON MARKETS. London, October 4. The total revenue in the Bank of England in notes and bullion is £12,900,000, a decrease of £1,900,000 during the week. The proportion of reserve to liabilities has fallen 3 per cent., and is now 44 per cent. The bank rate of discount remains at 3 per cent., and the market rate at 2-3. 8 Consols are unchanged at 101-§. New Zealand securities remain as follows:—s per cent. 10-40 loan, 103£; 5 percent. 1889 loan, 105 per cent. 1879-1904 loan, 101J • 4 per cent, inscribed stock, 101^.
