FIRE BRIGADE.—THE LATE FIRE.
A special meeting of the Fire Brigade, con- / vened by Superintendent Hughes, was held last evening at the station. All the members were present, and the following resolution was unanimously carried :—" That there is no ill-feeling existing between the members of the Brigade and the Salvage Corps, and that both bodies have always worked together in fighting the common enemyfire. Also, that this Brigade is of opinion that the action taken by Superintendent Hughes in stopping parties from removing Mr. Williams' furniture was justifiable, seeing that his orders had been set at defiance. Had his order bean obeyed in the first instance, the accident which occurred to Captain Field would not have happened. Mr. Williams having asked the advice of Superintendent Hughes as to the desirability of removing his furniture, was answered to the effect that it was not necessary, and that nothing was to be removed out of his house. It was stated that Mr. Williams, while endeavouring to carry out Mr. Hughes' advice, was knocked down in his own'house by the mob, who were dragging his goods out of the place. Attention was also called to the manner in which the orders of both Superintendent Hughes and Captain J?ield were disregarded, in forcibly removing a portion of Mr. Taylor's stock when thero was not the slightest necessity for so doing, and that Mr. B. Lewis, who was asked by Mr. Taylor to assist him in preventing the removal of the goods, was grossly insulted.
