THE NEW GAOL.

Captain Hume, Inspector of Prison?, who is at present in Auckland, i 3 pleased with the progress which has been made in the construction of the new prison. Thirty prisoners are employed in quarrying, 20 titone-dressing, and 10 building. There is a large quantity of dressed stone now on hand. It is expected that in 18 months one wing will be completed and ready for use. Captain Hume has given instructions for the Gaol and Police Station to be connected by telephone. The Inspector has also made satisfactory arrangements in regard to the hours of duty of the warders. He visited the Thames, and was much disappointed with the prison accommodation there. He is taking steps to have a new Gaol built at the Thames. Captain Hume returns to Wellington by the Waihora on Thursday next,
