INTER-SCHOOL ATHLETICS.

Am athletic meeting, which we hope will be the first of a series, between the Auckland College and Grammar School and the Auckland Church of England Grammar School, wa3 hold at the Ellerslie racecourse (kindly lent for the occasion) on Saturday, afternoon. Owing to the short notice —the meeting having been arranged only last Thursday—there were but few visitors present. The conditions were, that the events should be contested by those who gained the first three places in their respective annual meetings, and that no prize should be awarded, but that competitors should run for honour alone. This condition was made with a view to eradicating the pernicious custom so prevalent in Auckland of "pot-hunting," that is, running for the monetary value only of a prize. The winners, however, will have the right of wearing a ribbon combining the colours of the two schools. The following was the programme : — 1. o>'E Rukdbsd Yards. — Taylor (C.E.G. 3.), 1; White (C.E.G.S.), 2; Wood 3. Time, 11 seconds. This was a grand race, but Taylor drew rapidy to the front, and won by a couple of yards. White and Wood well together for a second and third. 2. Half-mile.—Wood, 1 ; Brett, 2 ; Tawhai, 3. A.C.G.S. secured the three places. Time, 2min. 14 4-ssecs. Wood ran very steadily, and though having the outside of the curve, gradually drew to the front and won a good race by half a yard. In this race Quick (C.E.G.S., winner of his school half-mile), haviug hurt himself, was unable to run. 3. Hordlk Race.—l2o yards, 6 flights. Taylor (C.E.G.S.), 1 ; White (C.E.G.S.), 2 ; Poland(A.C.G.S.) 3. Time. 17secB.. This was one of the most exciting races of the day, the field being well together, and was won on the winning-post by Taylor, with Poland a good third. 4. Qoarter-mile. — Tawliai (A.C.G.S.), 1 ; Wood (A.C.G.S.). 2 ; White (C.E.G.S.), 3. Time, 57min. 2-10secs, Lusk had a long lead to within a hundred yards of home, when he knocked up, leaving Tawliai to win by three yards. 5. Hioii Jump.—Maclaurin (A.C.G.S.), White (C.E.G.S.), and Williams (C.E.G.S.) all tied at 4 feet 11 inches. Owing to his having re-opened a wound received at the school hurdle race last Wednesday, White was unable to repeat that day's performance of 5 feet 3 inches. Maclaurin, who deserves high praise for the neatness of his jumping, unfortunately slipped and fell, and this prevented him from doing justice to himself. 6. Onjs Mile.—Wood. 1; Brett, 2; Tawhai, 3. A.C.G.S. again secured the three places. Quick, the C.E.G.S. Mile-man was, as previously stated, unable to run. Owing to mistaken measurement, the course was 170 yards ahort, and, had the full distance been run, the time, 4min. 4S 3-ssecs., would probably have been about smin. 17secs. The Held were well together, until within 200 yards of the winning post, when Tawhai spurted, but was passed by Wood and Brett, who finishod barely half-a-yard apart. 7. LokgJumt.—White (C.E.G.S.), 16feet 9Ainclies ; Maclaurin (A.C.Cx.S.), 16 feet 2 inches ; Tawhai (A.C.G.S.), 15 feet 24 inches. Poland (A.C.G.S., the winner in his school sports) was unable to compete owing to his having to catch the Waikato train. Maclaurin was again unfortunate, and deserved great credit for his pluck and perseverance. By this it will be seen that each school has won three out of the seven, and tied at the "odd" event. The first competition therefore resulted in a dead heat. The following gentlemen acted as officers : Starter : Mr. J. K. Johnston, to whom the thanks of the two schools are due for the efficient manner in which he got the fields away ; judgeß : Messrs. J. Sloman, aud H. T. Pycroft ; referee, Mr. C. F. Bourne ; time-keepers : Messrs. A. de L, Hammond and W. H. W. Nicholls, The stop-watches were kindly lent by Mr, Petry, of Victoriastreet. I —
