It is still raining. _ NELSON, Friday^ Captain Cross, the well-known, harbourmaster of this port, and who, having arrived from England in the ship Whitby in the year 1841, discovered NeUon harbour, died yesterday morning. He was the first white man who stepped ashore in Nelson, and was appointed pilot for that place and neighbouring coast by the New Zealand Company, m whose service he left the Old Country as warden pilot. In 1848 he was appointed pilot at Auckland, and m 1850 harbour-master, pilot, ire., at Nelson, and from his first arrival was never a sent from the colony. He was the last survivor of the expedition men who camo out in the Wliitby. He was greatly respected here and by all mariners with whom he came in contact. CHRISTCfIURCH, Friday. It appears to be definitely settled that a portion of Hagley Park will be granted for the purpose of the International Exhibition. In answer to the City Council and Domain Board the Premier has replied, " When particulars ot the plans and conditions are received, preparations for a lease will be undertaken without delay." It was intended to lay off the site to-day, but owing to tho incessant rain it was postponed. It has been decided to enlarge tho buildings for exhibition by increasing the width, Bo as to admit of four additional bays, each 15 feet ■I, i ln ® ac b end. This arrangement will provide eight more bays, with a total space for exhibition purposes of 1440 square feet. The gangways or approaches to these bays will cover some 480 square feat, so the total area of the additions will be 1920 superficial feet. DUKE DIN, Friday. A member of the Waikouaiti Rifles did some extraordinary shooting whilst firing for the district prizes. He failed to hit the target in twenty-one shots. A man named Thomas Hancox was killed at the Victoria Saw Mills, Tapanui, yesterday, by a falling tree. INVERCARGILL, Friday. Judgment was given in the R.M. Court to-day id the case against Daniel Weber, of Wallace, who was charged with aiding and abetting personation in the recent election. Three charges were preferred, and the Court held the evidence in each sufficient to take his trial at the next sitting of the Supreme Court. Bail was allowed, the amount in each case being, defendant in £100, and two sureties in £50 each.
