ILLNESS OF MR. PARNELL. London, December 8. Mr. Parnell, who is confined in ELilmainham gaol, is reported to be ill. THE LONDONDERRY CONTEST. London, December 7. Sir Samuel Wilson, of Victoria, the defeated candidate for Londonderry, threatens to petition against the election of Mr. Porter, Q.C., the newlyappointed Solicitor-General of Ireland, on the ground that he used indirect means of bribery to gain the election. PROTECTIVE FORCE FOR IRELAND. London, December 7. The Government has invited one thousand men of the army reserves or retired policemen to volunteer for special protection duty in Ireland, as Irish police. DEATHS BY LIGHTNING. London, December 7. A severe storm, accompanied with heavy thunder and lightning, was experienced here yesterday, during which two persons were struck by lightning and killed instantaneously. LONDON MARKETS. London, December 7. Consols have advanced to 99i. New Zealand securities and colonial breadstuff's remain at yesterday's quotations. Astralian tallow has advanced Is per cwt. Best beef is quoted at 3Ss 6d, and best mutton at 41s Gd. At to-day's wool auction 8900 bales were catalogued. A fair demand was again experienced for the various lots offered. SHIPPING. London, December 7. Arrived : Ship St. Leonards from Lyttelton, on September S. As the ship Pareora, bound for Auckland, was in the Downs, she was obliged to slip her anchors in order to avoid collision with another vessel, by which she would inevitably have been run down. She was towed back to the Thames for fresh anchors, and the owners of the tug have claimed £5000 salvage money. The Pareora has since sailed again for Auckland.
