DEAN STANLEY'S SCHOOLMASTER.

Sir,—The admirers of the late Dean of Westminster to a large extent forget the sources of his real goodness, and do not, as they ought, trace up hia works and life to IJr. Arnold, once head-master of Rugby behool. Many distinguished names of his pupils are great on the scroll of fame. Dean Stanley wrote the excel'cat jLife of Dr. Arnold, and showed that gratitude to hit old tutor which was characteristic of himself and did honour to hia schoolmaster. Dr. Arnold expected both piety and intellectual vigour from the Rugby scholars, and obtained what he strove after. He lived long enough to produce a telling number of true Christian gentlemen, who now do honour to Great Britain, who are neither bigots nor infallibilists — men whose sharacters are neither shallow nor narrow, whose religion is composed of a divine life and a divine krowledge—men like Ridley and Sir Xsaac Newton. The present learntd Duke of Argyll, and the Archbishop of Canterbury, are proofs ef what Rugby can effect in producing men of restless energy, moral and intellectual. In the Church, the army, the navy, at the bar, and in Parliament, are many old Rugby boys who exhibit the influence of Dr. Arnold, and are proofs that wherever schoolmasters work as conscientiously as he did, they will share in his success, and perhaps in his renown.—l am, &c., Old England.
