THE STREETS OF AUCKLAND.

UF AUijm x/, TO THE EDITOR.

Sir,—ln passing up Queen-street yesterday I noticed a party taking surveys or levels on the hillside of Victoria-street East. lam glad there is some show and intention on the part of the Corporation to do something to improve that wretched-looking portion of the city ; it has hitherto been a disgrace to us, and a terror to pedestrians or drivers of vehicles. I have no idea what ia intended to be done, or what plan ia to be adopted, but it may be worth their while to havo an outsider's opinion, and from a non-professional point of view. The surroundings of the new Court-houae, as it looks towards the Northern Club, show in -wet weather a complete bog, without the slightest apology for a road at all, and a3 you continue down the heightaof Victoria-street East it formsone of the most dangerous and risky entrances into Auckland that I know of. What I would suggest would be, as Coburg-street comes with a rise from \Vel-lesley-street to the stono wall facing the end of Victoria-street East, let it be lowered instead, all the way, until opposite the Courthouse, and do away with the street leading up to the Northern Club, and so make the park continuous. It would form a magnificent amphitheatre. By thus lowering Coburg-street, the steep ascent from Vic-toria-street East would be considerably lessened, and would allow of a road to branch right and left into Coburg-street. Where the park side faces Victoria-street East, a broad flight of stone steps is required, with broad landings, easy of ascent or descent for old people and children. This could be made to be rather an ornament than otherwise, as seen from Queen-street, if not fashioned after Jacob's Ladder style, and such accommodation is due pedestrians, as ample provision is being made for carriage drives and gates.—l am, &c. t Auckland, July 27.
