ONEHUNGA.
The works lately undertaken by the Borough' of Onehunga. for the purpose of supplying the shipping at the two wharves with a supply of good water are now finished, and taken over by the Council. Yesterday the Hinemoa and two other steamers were supplied for thrir boilers and other purposes. The works 'rbieh, in respect to the power used for raising the water to a sufficie»t height are unique, have been completed in a most satisfactory manner by the contractor, Mr. R. Farrell/ of Onehunga, and are expected to cost a little over £1000. At a public meeting of the burgesses, it was unanimously agreed to devote the revenue derived from publicans' licenses, about £350 a year, to this object. The Council then offered a premium for the best plan, which was awarded to Mr. E. Bartley, of Auckland, who has also had fhe entire superintendence of the erection of the works. The works include a large well, blasted through solid rock, close to some of the best springs which it has tapped, affording, even at this season, an. amply supply of the purest water. Close to this well is erected a tubular boiler, from which steam is injected into a pulsometer fixed down the well. This pulsometer is bslived to be the first and only one working in the colony ; though one was temporarily fitted up, and at work at Messrs. FraSier and Tinne's, which decided the Council to adopt this simple machine, and as far as itlias been yet proved, it admirably answers the requirements. This boiler and pulsometer were supplied and fixed by Mr. Yeo«aan, of Auckland: The pulsometer lifts the water from the well, and discharges it into a large reservoir capable of -holding about 20,000 gallons, from which it flows by gravitation through pipes to the wharves. The Council have fixed 2s 6d a tun as the price; This moderate rate was decided on as the Council did not undertake the work for profit; but solely for the benefit of the -port. The Mayor, Mr.'G. Codlin, took the opportunity of the Hon. the Attorney-General and the Hon. Mr.Bryce jjaissing through, to' show them the works, with which they expressed 'satisfaction. "Mr. Sw.mson was ; also present, • and 'thoroughly inspected the whole, even.to goingdown the well to examine, the pulsdmeteiv—[OwnCorrespondent, April 30.]
