SUBSIDY RETURNS: COUNTY OF EDEN.

-9 Circulars have been forwarded to the chairmen of the various Highway Boards, relative to the subsidies to the credit of the County of EJen, on the 3ist of May, 1879, and, as the figures are of considerable interest, wi publish them as follow : S :■;. a. The large proportion deducted from the County subsidy for hospitals and charitable institutions, has taken them by surprise, as it is difficult to imagine the basis upon which the deduction was made ; and then there is a further deduction for charges paid on behalf of the County, of £99 Ss, which is not clearly explained. Of one thing they are satisfied, that the amount they are to receive is very much less than they expected, and when the small balance is subdivided amongst the Road Boards, the indi--dual portions will be very small indeed.
