OCTWABD3 Coastwise. —South Carolina, cutter, for Great Barrier, in ballast. The brigantine Augusta sailed yesterday morning from the Manukau for Kaipara, and will there load with timber for the South. The brigantine Oamaru and the brig Transport, which left this port on the 11th instant for Whangaroa, had not arrived up to yesterday, and have no doubt sought shelter in one of the nnmerous anchorages on the coast. The s.s. Glenelg arrived in harbour yesterday morning, from Tauranga. and Mercury Biy, with passengers and the following cargo : 14 head cattle, 8 pigs, 4 tons pumpkins, 22 mats en»ar, 6 bags onions, and 3 tons of sundries. She will sail for the same ports this afternoon. The brig Syren arrived in harbour yesterday from Sydney, with a cargo of sundry merchandise, chiefly bonedust. Tho brig left Sydney on the 4th inet., with fresh westerly winds, which, continued until the 19th. It then freshened into a gale, and increased in violence, so that the vessel had to heave-to at noon on Saturday, and remained in that position until the same hour of the following day. Thence fresh westerlies until sighting the Cavallia early on Monday, and subsequent calms and fresh S.W. winds until making the harbour. The brigantine Island Lily arrived in harbour early yesterday from Levuka, after a most tempestuous passage of 20 days. The vessel brings a large cargo of maize, sugar, and other Island produce, which come to a bare market. Captain Cooper reports leaving Levuka on the 29th ultimo, with light southerly winds and calms until the lGth instant, the vessel being fully seven days of this time becalmed within sight of Levuka. From the ICth, until off the coast on Wednesday, had a succession of strong south-west gales and heavy seas until the latter day, when an easterly breeze sot in, and the harbour was made before daylight yesterday. The s.s. Hannah Mokau arrived in the Manukau on Thursday morning, from Waitara, with a cargo of cattle and sheep. Information was received in town on Thursday that the well-known cutter Sovereign of the Seas was stranded on Opotiki Bar on Tuesday last. Tho cutter waa boing towed in by the s.s. Staffa, and when on the bar, the sea being roHgh and a heavy swell rolling in from the eastward, the tow-line broke, and tho cutter had to be left. According to the last account, she was bumping heavily, and would no doubt break up. She is owned by Messrs. Gilmour and Short, and is insured in the South British Insurance office. The N.Z.S.S. Co.'a s.s. Rangatira left New Plymouth yosterday afternoon for Onehunga, and. may be expected there this morning. She

is advertised to sail for New Plymouth, Wanganui, a»d Wellington, at 1 p.m. to-morrow. The s.s. Lalla Kookh ia announced to eail from Onehunga at 10 a.m. to-day for Raglan. The schooner Meg Merrilies, from Leruku, viaNadi, was to leave the former on the 29th ultimo, and she is therefore fully duo h»re. , The Union Co.'s s.s. Ladybird, Captain Malcolm, arrived in harbour at an early hour this morning from East Ooasfc ports and the South, with passengers and cargo. She is announced to return South at 4 p.m. onSunday. The Ladybird left Port Chalmers on tho 20th at 2 p.m., and arrived at Lyttelton on the 21st at 5.30 p.m. She encountered a heavy S.B. gale and very high sea. Left Lyttelton at 8 p.m., and arrived at Wellington on the 22nd at 2.50 p.m. Left on the 23rd at 12.30 p.m., arriving at Napier on the 24th at 10.20 a.m. Left at 5 p.m., and arrived at Gisborne on the 25th at 7 a.m. Had thick weather on the pussaje. Left at 10.30 a.m., and arrived at Tauranga on the 20th at 8 a.m., the thick weather continuing. Left at 10.45 a.m., and arrived at Auckland at 11.30. Wind : N.W., and thick, with rain. ' Thebriganfcine Roderick Dhu, from Duaediu, arrived in harbour yesterday afternoon, with a full cargo of grain, breadstuffs, and sundries. Captain Robertson reports leaving Dunedin, in tow of a. steam tug, on Monday night, the lutk inst., the wind being fresh from the N.E., and when on the bar the wind shifted to the opposite quarter, S.W., blowiag fresh, with rain. Off Castle Point, on the 19th, the wgather cleared up, and then a light breeze set in from the south. Rounded tho East Cape on Friday, tke 20th. A strong gale from ".V.N.W. sprang up the following day, and lasted until Tuesday night, when the breeze hauled round to the N.E., accompanied with heavy rain and thick weather, right up into harbour. The U.S. Pretty Jane arrived in harbour last night from Gisborne, via Hicks'. Bay, with passengers and cargo. The steamer left Gishoruo on Sundiy morning at C a.m., for Hicks's Bay, arriving th»ro at 1 a.m. on Monday. The wind was blowing fresh from the west, and, as the sheep were not mustered, remained until Wednesday, when the inspector objected to their being sent on board. Left at 2 p.m. of that day with a dead calm, but at 4 p.m. a breeze from the N.E. arose, and gradually increased until off the Alderman yesterday, when it blew with fearful violence, the steamer running before it, and making the harbour at 7 P.m. The brig Pakeha, from Dunedin to Whangaroa, was eighted by the Roderick Dhu on Friday last oft" Hawke's Bay. Mr. L. J. .Eaton received a telegram yesterday, that the brigantino Helena was to leave Oamaru in tho evening for this port, with breadstuffs and grain. The brigantine Ada C. Owen is expected to leave Dunedin on Tuesday next for this port with breadstuffa and grain. The s.s. Oreti arrived in the Manukau yesterday morning from Waitara, Wangurii, and the So»th, with passengers and a general cargo of merchandise. She is advertised to return to Waitara and intercediate ports as far as Wellington at 1 p.m. to-day, and may be expected again in the Manukau in about seven days. The schooner Christina, which left here last Sunday week for Russell, was, according to a message received iu town yesterday, at anchor in Mercury harbour, off Tairua. She ran there for shelter from one of the gales which have been so severe on the coast during the last ten days, having lost her mainsail and staysail. After "repairing damagei »ho will resume the voyaje to Russell. Captain Amodeo, of tho s.s. Pretty jane, reports that the following vessels were in Hicks s Bay when he left on Wednesday afternoon. Rounding the point he saw most of tho vessels "ettiii" uuder weigh, and it is, therefore, probable that most of them will arrive early today :—Brig Wave, from Oamaru; schooners Saucy Kate and Minnie Hare, from Gisborne ; and the Waiwera, from Lyttelton—all bound for Auckland. Also, the schooners Acadia and Orpheus, for Mercury Eay. The schooner Saucy Kate has had a most trying time of it, the schooner being six weeks from this port to Gisborne and back. The schooner Waiwera reports that, when off the Kaikouras, she experienced a violent S.E. gale, the deck being cleau swept by heavy seas, and the ciew had, iu consequence to take to the rigging.
