THE GOLDFIELDS.

MONTHLY SUMMARY. [fkom our own correspondent.] Thames, Saturday. Mining matters generally are etill very de pressed, and unfortunately, at present, then does appear much, prospect of any important change for the better. During the month certain capitalists in Auckland mide another offer to the County Council for the £50,000 securities for the mortgages on the United Pumping Association's proporty, but the Council declined to accept it. The drainage is, consequently, still unsettled, and in the meantime the water has risen almost to the floor of the Caledonian No. 3 level, on which, as will presently be seen, an important discovery has been made. Unless the pumps aro started again very soon, the consequences will be most disastrous l .—Moanataiari : There is no change of any importance! to aotice in this miue. The"" Point Russell section is being opened up east and west of the second winze sank on the lode, and constant crashing is jjoing on of the quartz from this portion of the mine. Small parcels of picked stone ara occasionally obtained. The general stuff is ehewing an improvement on what it has been. Tunnel level: Three hnndred feet eastward of the Point Russell, main winze a cross-cut is being driven on this level, under the Point Russell section of the mine. The drive has been going through country of a favourable description, and a number of quartz stringers have been iutersected, but no lodes of any size. SO-feet level: The drive on No. 3 reef at this level has broken through to the winze sunk from the tunnel level. In the face : the lode is one foot thick, and is yielding payable quartz. Stoping east and west of the winze will be commenced in a few days. This lode is likely to yie'.d a large tonnage of good crushing dirt, as the tributes, who have been working on it immediately above the tunnel level, have had 3ome excellent crushing lately. 218-feet level: The drive westward on this level has been extended a considerable distance, and !s now throngh tho No. 2 slide. The No. 9 reef has been picked up seaward of this slide. In the face it is 24 feet thick, and ias a promising appearance, being freely ;harged with goad mineral indications. In ;he stopes above the level colours of gi.ld iave boon seen in the stone.—Kuranui: Che drive northward on the battery level las been extended a considerable distance, md broke through into sonie old workings n the Oddfellows' mine. Beyond these workings the lode was again picked up, but t is not nearly so large in size, and the |uartz is not of such good quality. A long eDgth of stopes has been opened up above ijie level, but tho quartz obtained is not so ieh in the precious metal as it »vas near the vinze sunk from the Shotover level. On he Sbotover level the rutin cro-s-cut has >een extended a farther distance of 190 feet, tnd several sma'l leaders have been interiected, f roin some of which good prospects iave been obtained. On one of them the nanager is starting to open out. The yield or the month is a good one. —Caledonian : during the month tbe opsrations on he No. 3 loda at the No. 2 level, have ended to confirm the g:od opini >n enterainud of the lode. The drive westward has been pushed forward some disance, and the reef has improved i= appearnco. Strong colours of tho precious metal iave been seen in the quartz, and small parels of picked stone are constantly being btained. In the stopes above the level, here is a fine body of atone, which is yieldng a large tonnage of excellent crushing irt. Oα the No. 3 level, the lode has been utersected. Here it is about 4 feet thick, nd contains excellent mineral indications, n driving on it, a small leader has been 'i3ked up on the footwall, from which some ood golden stone has been obtained. The nd is a most important one, and it is the pinion of those who nre well acquainted with he field that, as the lode is opened up, rich deositsof the precious metal will be discovered. In fortunately the water is within ten feet f the floor of the drive, and it is expected hat all work will be stopped on this level in week or two. Crushing operations are in rogress at the Herald battery, where the eneral stnff is shaping verv well.—Old lolden Calf : The operations in this mine re on the same reef as the Caledoniun comany are working upon. Below the No. 3 ivel a winze has been sunk from 15 to 20 set, and some excellent stone showing gold :eely wa3 taken out. This work, however, as been suspended, owing to the water ooding it. On the level, driving eastward is eing continued on a strong body of likely joking stone. Five head of stampers re employedorUihiag for this company at the (neen of Beauty battery.—Cure : The prosecting drive on No. 6 lode hi 3 intersected de cross lode in a favourable class of onntry. The lode ie about 4 inches thick t the junction. It will be opened up at nee.—Alburnia : The ground in this mine bove the Whau level has nearly all been st on tribute. "West of No. 4 winze the tope 3 en the small leaders are yielding good rushing dirt, with occasional parcels of icked stone. 70 feet level: On this level lie drive west has been suspended for the resent. In the stopes between Nos. 3 and : winzes there is a strong body of healthyjoking stone. A considerable quantity of ;ood crushing dirt is coming to hand from iere. The reef is being driven eastward on his level. In the face there is a body of tone about 2J feet thick, which has a pronising appearance. In the stopes above the eef is larger, and yields a large quantity if fair crushing dirt. On Dixon'a lower evel, the reef is still being driven on westvard, without any change to note. The lountry is of a favourable character. On the Jons of Freedom tunnel level, a contract has leen let for driving 100 feet eastward on the eef. In the face there 13 a strong welllefined lode, which has a prmising appearinco. The stone contains good mineral indilations, but no gold has bsen seen in it.— tVaiotahi: The No. 4 lode has been interiected on the new level, at about 90 feet rom the shaft. On breaking down the lode, itrong colours of the preoious metal were ieen in the stone. The main cross-cut is jeing pushed ahead, but the No. 5 lode is lot yet to hand. From the atopes above the S"o. 2 level a considerable quantity of crushng dirt has been obtained, and the return s fair one,—Several tributers in the various nines have been doing well dnring the past nonth. From the Waitekauri district, one )r two good returns have been banked, and the stuff which is now being crushed is reported to be shapiug well.—On the Tararu 3reek, a party, who have been prospecting for i number of years, have discovered what appears to be a continuation of the oncefamous Black Reef. The reef averages from "our to six feet thick, and a parcel of between afty aud sixty tons of quartz, when crushed, yielded the excellent return of 98ozs. melted gold. The gold is very good, being worth ibout £3 15s per ounce.
