POLICE COURT.—SATURDAY.

[Before R. C. Barstow, Esq., 8.M.1 j Drtjnkwness.—Four persons were fined ."or this effence. Breach op Vagrant Act.—John Pepper was charged with a breach of the Vagrant j Act, by being a roguo and a vagabond, fee. , On the application of Sergeant-Major Mlason, J the case was remanded till Monday. Breach of Customs Regulations.—Henry , Keane and Isaac Hunt were charged with a j breach of the Customs Regulations, by evading duties of Customs in dealing with certain goods, to wit, 36 gallons of rum, with intent to defraud Her Majesty of the duties ' of Customs. Both prisoners pleaded not '■ guilty. Mr. Brookßeld appeared for the prosecution. Thomas Hill deposed that he , was Collector of Customs. When the echooner Madooa left Auckland, a short ( time ago, she had several casks of rum on j board. Detective Jeffrey deposed that he was in St. George's Bay, and saw a boat in 1 the bay waiting for the tide to rise. Aocom- : panied by Constable Strathearn, he pro- : ceeded to the boat. When the prisoners saw them coining, they left the boat and ran away. On searching the boat, they found a keg of rum. .They caught the prisoners, wlio owned they had made a mess of it. Constable Strathern gave corroborative evidence. Henry Parker deposed that the keg of rum in question was one of five shipped on board the schooner Madona. Prisoners said they found the rum on the Rangitoto beach. His Worship said they knew it was there, and ho must find them guilty of the charge. The full penalty of the law was a tiue of £100. They must pay a sum of £50, and costs £7. Stealing a Sovereign.—Alfred Philcox was charged with stealing a sovereign, the property of Henry Colquhouu. On the application of Sorgeant-Major Mason, the case was remanded till Monday. Deserting Wife and Children. — Tho3. Vesey was charged with leaving his wife and children without support. Defendant pleaded not guilty. After a long statement made by the defendant and pTaintirT, his Worship ordered defendant to pay the sum of 6i per week while he was in work,
