The committee may congratulate themselves on everything going off so well and affording such a capital day's amusement} AGRICULTURAL SHOWS. NORTH KAIPARA AGRICULTURAL SHOW. This long-looked-for event has come and gone, the result being anything but discouragiug, considering the exceptionally dry seasou. This year the show was held at Matakohe, so that it has now been the round of all these settlements. There was a large number of visitors from surrounding districts who seeuied to take great interest in their local show, and I could not help remembering the words of Wallace at the Auckland show dinner, that he hoped the couutry people would drop their local shows and come to the Auckland one." Perhaps when the North is accommodated with a railway like the Waikato we may just come and help to take away a few prizes, but even then wo shall not do away with our own shows. The show of horned stock, so far as quality is concerned, was not so good as it might have been, while that of horses and sheep, was rather an improvement. The show of fruit and produce wa3 very good, especially the fruit, the display of apples and plums exctlling auything hitherto shewn, proving conclusively that these districts ought to make orchards a speciality and so prevent much money bting sent out of the colony for this purpose. Many of the wines were of excellent quality. One (a Burgundy, and the produce of Mr. Downing, of Wairoa,) being first-class. Mr. Wright, of Paparoa, now so well known in connection with pottery, exhibited a large collection of his wares, and anything I could say would not give tbe faintest description of their excellence ; certain it is that nothing of the kind has ever been seen before south of the Line. The exhibits ineluded flower and garden vases, watercoolers, &c. A roll of matting, manufactured by hand bj r Mr. Oldham, attracted much notice; also, two hats (a lady's and gentleman's), manufactured from the nikau palm by Miss Fisher and Mrs. Jarvie. romato sauce, shown by Mrs. Moulder, was highly approved. A sample of woollen yarns, spun by Mrs. Skelton, was very uuck admired; as was a glass case, con* :aii\ing kauri gum ornaments, the manufacture of Mr. Thomson. Mr. Coates showed samples of wool, taken from a leece weighing 22J lbs. in the grease, one fear's growth. These were splendid samples, ihowing what these Northern lands will do f properly attended to. The following is the prize list: — STOCK. Judges : Messrs. "W. Young and H. JlcMurdo.
