WAIUKU CATTLE SHOW.

[from our own reporter BY TELEGRAPH j 1 Waiuku, February 11. The annual Cattle Show for this district was J held here to day in Mr. Sedgwick's paddocks. I The day is everything that the most ex- ■ acting could desire — clear, with a fine, i warm sunshine, and a fine, cool westerly • breeze blowing. The entries are much I fewer than they were last year. To- - day they number in all 172, and several of the entries made were not exhibited. Last 5 year, I believe, the entries numbered about 250. It appears to be the general opinion | among the settlers here that a show will not 1 be held next year. Ten annual shows have » now been held, and an opinion seems to be growing that there is more honour in being commended at a show such as that held at Auckland than to have a prize awarded at a small show. Though tfce articles exhibited were fewer than last year, in many instances greater merit was shewn. Tbe samples of wheat exhibited were very good, and the eame may be said regarding the grass-seed. This was especially good, and if it could be supplied in quantity of the quality of the few pounds exhibited, I am sure a ready market would be found for it in Auckland, at remunerative prices. In respect to fruit of various kinds, Waiuku this year maintained her good character. Plums, peaches, and apples left nothing to be desired. The show of nectarines was good, but the samples were of small size. The list of preserves was well filled, but there was seldom more than one sample in each class exhibited. This is not as it should be in a district where fruit comes to such perfection as it does here. There was one new feature at the exhibition to-day, which deserves to be mentioned. —I allude to the exhibition of locally-baked bread in loives weighing not less than 41bs. each. Among the exhibitors in this section were three unmarried ladies, and I am glad to say that one of the lady candidates for a husband succeeded in carrying off the first prize from eight other competitors. Horses were few in number ; but there appears to be an improvement in the horse stock as compared with what they were a few years ago. Some of the cattle exhibited were good, but the number was few, —far less thau might be expected in an agricultural district like | Waiuku. To shew the comparatively little interest taken, I may mention that there were only three exhibits of butter and no exhibits of cheese, good or bad. The sheep, though few, were a very fair lot, but the recent fall in the price of wool in the London market and the dry spring aud summer which have been experienced have had a very discouraging effect upon the sheep-farmers in this district. Sheep are now looked upon as stock of not much value. Swine are more in favour, aud the exhibits in this class of stock were far superior to the general run of pigs shewn at Ellerslie in November last. Messrs. S. J. Austin, John Runciman, and Joseph Clark were the judges of horses, cattle, sheep, and swine, and Messrs. Wren and Lavers, of Auckland, and J. Wallace, of Bothwell Park, Waiuku, judges of saddlery, field produce, seeds, potatoes, garden produce, dairy produce, fruits, articles of local industry, preserves, and bread. Mr, A. Buekland, the President of the Association, was piesent throughout the day. Subjoined is the prize list: — CLASS I.—HORSES. Draught Stalllou—C. Hosking, Ist prize; K. Constable, L'nd.
