AQUATIC.

THE BEGATTA CLUB. Tiie annual meeting of the members of the above Club was held on Feb. 11, in the large rooru of the Cosmopolitan Hotel, and the attendance was large in comparison with previous years. The report of the secretary and treasurer with regard to the balance in hand, and the promises for the next Begatta, are such as to indicate that a greater spirit of enthusiasm has been engendered of late in these annual aquatic races than has been apparent for many years past. Mr. Von der Heyde was called to the chair, and read the advertisement convening the meeting. The secretary, Mr. Burgess, then read the minutes of the last meeting, which were confirmed by those present. Sir. Thos. Benderson, jun., read the balance-sheet, the adoption of which was moTed from the chair, seconded by Mr. Stoddart, and unanimously passed. From this document we find that the expenditure, including prizeß to the amount of £36S 10s Gd, wa3 £454 13s 2d, which, with a balance of fSS 9s 2d carried ] forward, gives a total of £543 2s 4d. There- , ceipts wereßalance fromlaaty ear, £495s lOd; i subscriptions, £352 ss; entrance fees, £109 Is Cd ; tickets sold at the flagship, £32 10s : ! total, £543 2s 4d. The balance of £SS 9s 2d • carried forward has been augmented since 1 by several subscriptions coming in, so that ! there is upwards of £100 to the credit of the club. In addition to this, Mr. Lewisson, jeweller, haß notified his intention of presenting a silver cup, value £10, at the next regatta, for open sailing boats built in the ; colony between January, 1879, and January, ( ISSO. Mr. Gallagher, of the Cosmopolitan Hotel, also informed the meeting that he < would present a silver cup of the value of \ £35 to the large cutter race, both of which - intimations were received with applause. ; With the adoption of reports and balance- I sheet, the committee for the past year re- , tired from office, and the Chairman intimated , that it was the duty of those present to j elect new officers and committee.—Captain McKenzie suggested that it would be well to read the names of the subscribers who were members of the club, so that those present would be acquainted with those who were ( eligible to be upon the committee, as it was desirable that a little new blood should be 1 brought into the working of the affair. There was a good attendance present, and he doubted that if a special meeting was called by advertisement by postal card for the eluc- ; tion of the new committee, whether it would be as well attended as the present one. The : chaiiman and treasurer stated that this was , done last year, and new blood elected ; but the gentlemen sc added had failed to cooperate, and their places had to be supplied with the same management that had carried out the regattas successfully for years past. The election then proceeded, and the following gentlemen were appointed:—Patron: His Excellency the Governor, Sir Hercules Robinson. Vise-Patron : His Worship the Mayor. President: The Chairman of the Harbour Board. Vice-President: Hon. Thomas Henderson, M. L.C. Auditors: Messrs. C. B. Stone and J. Dacre. Treasurer : Mr. Thos. Henderson, jun. Committee : Messrs. W. Cruickshank, Stoddart, Gouk, T. JJic- < col, J. Marshall, Von der Heyde, Ox!ey, J. B. Graham, Nearing, Gallagher, Anderson, and li. E. Isaacs.
