OTAMATEA ANNUAL RACES.

These races were held at Batley, on the 12th of February, and having been looked forward to for some time, attracted a fair attendance from the surrounding districts. Everything passed off satisfactorily, without a dispute of any kind. The first race of the day was Handicap Hurdle Race, of 20sovs. Mr. Rye's Tom Finn, aged, list. 71bs. (D. Munn) 1 Air. Hopkins's b g Buccaneer, aged, 9st. 21bs, (Hopkins) ... ... ... ... ... 2 This race was entirely spoiled by Buccaneer bolting round the first hurdle and throwing his rider, which left it a walk-over for Tom Finn. Mr. Smeaton's Deceiver was scratched. Batley Cur, of 25sovs., weight for age. Mr. Smeaton's b g Deceiver, aged (F. North) 1 Mr. Kye's g g Warrior, (D. Munn) ... 2 Mr. Hull's b m Belle of the Isles, aged (Mooney) 3 This race was a gift to Deceiver, although carrying 141bs. over. Settlers' Race Handicap, of lysovs. Mr. Rye's b m Thorn, 4yrs., Sst. olbs. (D. Munn) 1 Mr. LirmeU's ch g Chanticleer, aged, 9st. (Williams) ... ... 2 Although this promised to be a good race, seven having entered, it turned out another liasco like the hurdles, two only coming to the post. Chanticleer bolted at the tirst turn. Maori Race, of £7 10s. Niho ... 1 Eramihia 2 I Otamatea Handicap, of 40sovs. Mr. Smeaton's b g Deceiver, Sst. lOlbs., carried lOst. Slbs. (F. North) ... ... 1 Mr. Hopkins's b g Buccaneer, Sst. lib. (E. Sarah) 2 Mr. Hull sb m Belle of the Isles, Sst. 41bs. (Mooney) ... ... ... ... ... 3 Mr. Rye sb g Tom Finn, lOst. 71bs. (Mann) 0 Mr. Linnell's b g Chanticleer, 7st. 12lbs. (Nathan) 0 This was the big race of the day, and although Deceiver was carrying 2Glbs. overweight, he again proved too much for the local liorses by winning as he liked. Tom Finn, from whom so much was expected, did nothing, as he seemed to be worn out. Pony Race, of osors. Mr. Heta's Guy Fawkes ... ... ... 1 Native's Blacksmith ... 2 Six started, and it was u complete boil over, as Blacksmith was expected to win as he liked. Consolation Race, of £7 10s. Mr. Hull's Belle of the Isles ... ... ... 1 Mr. Hopkins's Buccaneer ... ... ... 2 Mr. Rye's Warrior ... 3 There were several scratch races got up, which concluded a good day's sports.
