SPORTING.

WAIKATO RACES. Hamilton, Feb. 12. The attendance at tlie Waikato Turf Glut Annual Meeting, at Ohaupo, to-day, was the best that has ever been seen at Waikato. Hitherto the meeting has been, so tu speak, a close one,—confined to the district horses, —but, on this occasion, there were outside competitors capable and fit, and such as to make them dangerous. The coarse was quite fit, and no complaints on that score were made. In the absence of Dr. Waddington, Colonel Lyen officiated as judge. The Cambridge Keed Band played in front of the Grand Stand during the day, in a rousing and enlivening fashion. Handicap Hurdle Kace of 40sovs. Two miles, over eight flights of hurdles, 3 ft. 6in. high. 30s. on nomination ; 2Jsovs. on acceptance. V. Rutherford's ch g Sportsman, lOst. 121bs. (W. Bond) 1 Caulton's Harry Mount 2 Loafer (ridden by Hagginson), .Robin Hood (ridden by owner), and Booth's Irish Emigrant (ridden by Campbell) also ran. Betting : Even on Harry Mount, 2 to 1 against Sportsman, 3 to 1 against Loafer, 5 and G to 1 against the rest. The hurdles were substantially constructed, and it was quite evident that if a horse struck a hurdle he would come down, for the hurdle would not. At the start the favourite was Harry Mount, but a bold breast was made by the others. Harry Mount appeared to have been held back at the first, but it subsequently seemed to be an unnecessary precaution. At the first hurdle Laiug's Kobin Hood tumbled —the horse eseapiug without injury, and the rider sustaining a fiactured collar-bone. The other horses took the jumps, and at the back of the course Emigrant was out-paced, and Sportsman and Loafer had the running togtther, and kept this order until the second hurdle from home. There was every prospect of a fine race for the finish. When at the second last hurdle from home Loafer shied, and threw open a magnificent race to Sportsman, who won by 10 lenythg. The favourite was a bad second, and the others nowhere. Time, 4min. SOsecs. The result was received with loud cheering. Whitefoot and Tregeagle fl. were scratched. Loafer w as declared to have slbs. over-weight, Sportsman 21bs., and Irish Emigrant lib. Maiden' Fi.atf, of 30,-ovs. ; miles ; weight for age. Hall's blk g Sultan ... ... 2 This constituted itself into a raco between the colt and Sultan. They crept away from the others, and, to all appearance, there was a game race for home, but on the post the colc drew away as he liked, and won in magnificent stylo by two lengths. Time, 2inin. oOsec. There was a protest lodged by Hall, the owner of Sultan, against the colt, on the ground that he was not entitled to compete. The stewards have postponed the consideration of the affair. Terr Club Handicap, of lOOsovs. ; 2miles. humiliation, 2sovs. ; acceptance, osovs. Caulton's Gillie Callum, 7st. lOlbs. (Hodson) 1 Hone's Flirt. 7s t. lllbs. (Weal) 2 G-irland's Mil.'ern, 7st. 21bs. (Walton) ... 3 ilemento and Yaiapa also ran. The extra-' ordinary congl-. meratiou of colours quite mystified those who con-ulted the race cards. < It \va3 the great event of the day, and of the year, and it is no wonder that it was watched with interest. The betting was : even cn Memento, even on Gillie Galium, 5 ' to 1 against Malvern and Yatapa, 3 to 1 ' against Flirt. There was one false start, ' after which they got away, Yatapa in the ' lead, but he soon surrendered this position and took a back-seat. (Jiliie Galium was ap- ■ parently held in hand at the first, but the ; racing drew him out. Flirt and Malvern l made game play, and at the back of the r course it api eared as if the favourite was licked, but Hodson called on his horse before entering the straight, and he answered gamely. It was a magnificent race through the straight, but at the finish Gillie Callum sprang away from his company, and landed a winner by two lengths ; Flirt second, and Malvern third. The latter, considering that ' he carried ISlbs. over-weight, made magnifi- ; cent running. Time, 3min. 24-ec. Punga- i werewere and Harry Mount were scratched. , Waikato Stakes. I K.
