In addition to the above, there are several hack and pony races, with prizes from £5 to £10, all of which are post entries. Intending competitors in the 300-yards handicap, to be run in the Caledonian sports to be held at Ellerslie on the Prince of Wales' birthday, are reminded that entries close at 9 o'clock to-night, at the Occidental Hotel, where the secretary, Mr. Brown, will be in attendance. The handicap is confined to members of Cricket, Football, and Rowing Clubs, and in the highest sense of the word will be an amateur race. It is hoped that those who have been in form for the interprovincial and other football matches, will be found amongst the competitors in this race, as we feel confident that a spin of this kind would prove one of the most attractive features of the day.

MELBOURNE RACES. In our telegraphic colnmns will bo found the lateet gallops and betting of the favourites eDgaged in the Melbourne Cup. One of the staunchest favourites, Valentia, appears to have had a good spin ; and the consequence of this is that he holds the secoud place in the betting list. Other horses are now coming into more prominence, and we may expect to hear daily of horses that are now little thought of becoming firmer id the market. Timothy, who now holds the third place, and has been backed heavily, is a brewn horse, 4 years old, by Tim Whiifler, and is the property of one of the moat prominent supporters of the Turf iu New South Wales, Mr. E. Dβ Mestre. Luna, colt, ie also the property of the same gentleman, and is a brown colt by Maribyrnoug. CRICKET. The events for this afternoon in cricketing circles are A.C.C. v. West End, at the Domain ; and the Carlton v. North Shore on the latter club's ground. Wickets in each instance are to be pitched at 2 p.m. and players are requested to be punctual in attendance. ■ REGATTA.

The Auckland Regatta Club will hold a general meeting at the Thames Hotel on Tuesday evening next, in order to arrange for the forthcoming regatta. The interest centred in this annual festival is always verygreat, for Auckland is no doubt the leading maritime port of the colony, and its inhabitants are recognised as the most nautical community in JNew Zealand. Under snoh circumstances it is neceesary that every effort should be made to maintain this prestige, and we trust that the forthcoming festival will be in every way worthy of Auckland.
