The Governor is expected to arrive here on Thursday afternoon. He will be entertained at a ball on Friday, and will probably leave again on Monday. The Corporation will present an address on his arrival, and the Club will give a dinner. During his visit the Governor will stay at the Criterion Hotel. WELLINGTON, Saturday. Captain J. Campbell Walker, of State Forest Department, Madras, is coming to New Zealand, in connection with the organisation of a State Forest Department here. He is expected to arrive by the incoming March mail steamer. The fourth annual drawing Art Union of Victoria has been fixed for the Sth April. Subscriptions and prize list are expected to exceed any preceding. The Government have received s telegram to the effect that the Mikado left San Francisco on the 29th February, a day before her due. date. The Colima connects with her at Kandavu, and is due at Auckland to-morrow. The City of San Francisco arrived at San Francisco on the 9th instant.

A petition was presented to the Resident Magistrate to-day, as to the possibility of procuring a mitigation of the sentence passed upon a man and woman for indecency in the "Botanical Gardens. Mr. Crawford recommended the application to be sent to the Execntive. This was done, and the deputation went away after an interview w Ith the Minister of Justice, with the assurance that an application in accordance with the ; r wishes would at once be made, and that there wa3 little doubt but that would be practically released by Tuesday. Neither has as yet been subjected to the usual hard labour penalty accompany'ig such period of imprisonment. Sunday. A fire broke out this morning at a-qnarter past five o'clock. It originated iu the back store of W. aid G. Turnbulland Co., WiUisstreet. The fire brigade were very soon on tte ground and behaved splendidly, but not before the fire caught the rear of the premises of Moeller's Empire Hotel, which adjoined Turnbulls' store. The'oii&ln of the fire is unknown, but is supposed to have been i iused by rats, because where the fire was first found there was nothing stored but oats and salt, the latter of which is exceedingly scarce in the town at present. A few days ago, one of the storemen found a rats' nest entirely composed of vestas and their boxes, and at a considerable distance from where the matches were stored. The Empire Hotel was emptied of furniture and stock. AH the back part was burnt down, and many of the lodgers lost all but what they stood up in. Several of them, commercial travellers, lost a great quantity of jewellery. Turnbull was insured for about £3,500, in various offices, on building and stock, but the building and stock are valued at £7,500. The stock was valuable, having been recently largely increased by two shipments by the Ned White and Annie Lewis. Some thousands of pounds' worth of chairs alone were burnt. The stock anil goods in the Empire Hotel were insured for £2,500, divided among the following offices : —Standard, £250; New Zealand, £250; National, £1000; Royal, £500; Batavian, £500. TurnbnU was insured for .£IO3O in the Transatlantic. Mr. Hoskins and Miss Colville were amongst the lodgers. DUNEDIN RACES. DTJNEDIN, Saturday. The races were continued to-day. The meeting proved most Buccassful and the racing very good, most of the events being closely contested. The different events results as follows :— STEEPLECHASE. Auckland Kate 1 Native 2 Theodore 0 Betting: G to 4 on Theodore. Auckland Kate won by a mile and a half. The riders of the other two horses experiencing great difficulty in inducing their animals to face the hurdles, and after much perseverance, Native managed to get round the course, but Theodore gave up iu despair. A protest entered against Auckland Kate was dismissed. * rOEBTJET HANDICAP. Cloth of Gold 1 Ariel 2 Tadinor .. .. .. .. , .. .. 3 TOWS' ELATE. Guy Fawkes l Tattler 2 Thace were the only horses which ran. Both cantered till they came into the straight, when Guy Fawkes went ahead, winning easily by four lengths. FLYING lIAKBICAP. Fishhook 1 Ouy Fawkes 2 Wee Lad 3 Pungawerewere 0 Betting : Even on Guy Fawkes. Fishhook wento the front at the start, and was never headed, winning from Gny Fawkes by two lengths, with something to spare. Wee Lad was third, and Pungawerewere nowhere. HURRY-SCURRY HANDICAP. Glengar.-r 1 Vceiad 2 Glengarry won by a neck. CONSOLATION STAKES. St. lb. Elfin King 7 10 — 1 Hightßower .. .. 7 4—2 Haphazard T 2 — 0 Merry Monarch .67 — 0 Sir William .. 6 5 — 0 Steamer 5 10 — 0 Tadmor, Sst. olbs., was scratched. Merry Monarch led for a time, but the race was between Elfin King and Right Bower, who ran right away from the others, In coming up the straight, Elfin King winning by half-a-length.

There was a crowded house at the Opera on Friday night, "II Trovatore being repeated for the occasion.

Blondin had over 5000 spectators in his pavilion.
