CRIMINAL CALENDAR.

The next criminal session of the Supreme Court, at Auckland, will be commenced on the 3rd January next. The criminal calendar is unusually heavy, and the offences are of a most serious character. There are five charges of wilful murder, and two of these charges are against one person—a woman who was committed for the murder of her children, at the Thames. On the list there are also two charges of arson, one of perjury, one of indecent assault, seven of forging and uttering, two of stealing from the person, one of cutting and wounding, one of stealing from a dwelling-house, one of embezzlement and two [of larceny as a bailee. There are eighteen prisoners and twenty-four chargee. Three of the prisoners have not been received in the gaol and the particulars of their education, religion, &c, are not given. Of the other fifteen prisoners, ten can read and write, one can read but not write, and four can neither read nor write. None of them claim to have received superior education. Ten of them are married, two are widows, and three are single. Twelve of the prisoners are set down in the return as belonging to the Church of England, and three as Roman Catholics.
