THE GENERAL ELECTIONS.
Maksden. — We have received the following from Mr. Farrand :—"As my name has been before the public as a probable candidate for the district of Marsden, I solicit the favour of your columns to explain my reasons for declining the contest. Firstly, though a resident for 13 years, it has been in a thinlypopulated part of the district, and I feel, therefore, that I should have a great weight to move, and a. short lerer to move it with, before I could obtain general favour with tho electors. Secondly, the opponents of the old member are already so much divided by having three new candidates to choose from, that I will not be so unpatriotic as to add a fourth, the wish of my heart being, if possible, to secure a new and real representative for the district.—Wμ. B. Fakkanp, '"'e Arai, Dec. 24,1875." On Thursday, Dec. 23, Mr. Bradley, of the Upper Wairoa, a candidate for the county of Marsden, addressed the electors of Mangapai in the Presbyterian Church, Mangapai. The attendance was not so numerous as it would have been, on account of sufficient notice not being given. Mr. J. Bell occupied the chair. At the conclusion, a vote of thanks was given to Mr. Bradley. Eden.—We are confidently informed that the Central Committee have decided to bring out Mr. J. A. Tole, the chairman of the Poneonby Highway Board, in the interests of Sir George Grey'a party, for the Eden electorate. The nomination being fixed for to-morrow, Mr. Tole will, on the occasion, announce his political principles. Fba.nkltn.—Messrs. Hamlin, I,usk, and Woodward addressed the electors of Franklin, in the Public Hall, Wairoa, on Thursday evening. There was a good muster of the eettlers. We are unable to find room for a report of the speeches. Rodney.—On the 20th inst. Mr. Famall addressed the electors of Mahurangi, -in the Public Hall, Warkworth. Mr. Farnall entered into an explanation with reference to the vote of money for roads and bridges in the North. We have received a full report, but have not space for its insertion. Thames.—Mr. E. Graham and several others left Auckland yesterday afternoon for the Thames, and we are informed that at the hustings to-day, Mr. Graham is to be nomi- j nated, and also' Sir George Grey and Sir.Tulius ; VogeL. Sir George Grey will not be present j at the nomination, but he will proceed to the Thames at 10 o'clock to-day, accompanied by Mr. W. Mitchell, and will, we believe, address a meeting in the evening. Wβ do not know who are promoting the election of Sir Julius Vogel, but we are informed that it is improbable that he may be elected as. Sir George Grey's colleague.
