HIGHWAY BOARD MEETINGS.

PAPAKURA.

The annual meeting of the above was held in the Woodside school-house on Monday last, at 2 p.m. The Rev. G. Smales was unanimously called to the chair, after which the public announcement of the meeting was read, and the accounts of the year presented and passed. They were as follow:—Receipts : Rates collected, £43 7s Id; subscriptions to aid, 2s Id ; amount reoeived from Colonial Government, £2S : total, £71 9s 2d. Expenditure : Paid for forming roads, 17s 9d ; metalling and channelling, £30 28 Sd; bridges, and culverts, £5 7s; other works, £5 ; commission for collecting rates, £3 4s ; salaries and rent, £1 ; sundries, 19a Gd : total, £C 92s 2d. Amount of •■ates payable for the year, £4G Is 10W. The •jinual rate was struck at Jd per £ in the value to sell, and the following gentlemen ■■vere elected as trustees for the ensuing ;.ear: —Messrs. Scott, Martin, Barclay, Alien, 'uid De Carteret, and the two auditors ■Jected were Dr. Bodle and Mr. R. Martin, iun. Several matters of public interest were discussed by the meeting, such .as the Weeds and Watercourses Act. The mode of .'rtriking the rate, and specially the necessity at appealing to the Government for a reduction of the passenger fares and goods 'reight on the railway. It was the universal opinion of the meeting that the • iovernment would bo gainers by such a .: eduction.

The annual meeting of the ratepayers of t ids district took place on the 17th instant, a', one o'clock, at the Oratia Hotel, Hcntirson's Mill, when Mr. H. W. Henderson fas called to the chair. The original propositr<ui was then put .and carried. The following gentlemen were proposed as trustees :—A'casrs. John Smyth, H. W. Henderson, J. \Vieley, J. BetheU,..T. Huston, A. Kelly, aud.W. Freeman. Mr. G. Cantwell was also proposed, but declined. Messrs. Sisam am l Cantwell acted as scrutineers, and the result of the poll was as follows :—Henderson, 1G; freeman,- 14; Smyth, 12; BetheU, 12; Huston, 11 ; Wasley, .8 ; Kelly, G. The first five were duly elected trustees &r the ensuing year. Messrs. Seaman and V-on der Heyde wace re-elected auditors, and Messrs. Sißam and Sinell were elected as fenceviewers. A vote of thanks to the chairman brought the ratepayers' meeting to a close. A meeting of the newly-elected trustees was held iwmediately after the above, at which Mr. Fraocis Bethell was .appointed chairman of the Board.
