The Customs financial year ended on June SO. By the courtesy of the officers of this Government Department we are enabled to lay before our readers the returns of duties collected at this port for the half-year ended 30th June; also, the auaual returns. It will be seen by reference thereto that, during the lialf-ytar just ended, the revenue amounted to £121,940 10s 3d, against £ 1 05,4 to Is of the half-year ended 30th June, 1574, and against i' 59,420 collected during the half-year ended 30th .rune, 1573. The returns for the financial year just ended amount to £"234,549 Is 7d, or, in ronud numbers, nearly a quarter of a million of monoy. Among the curiosities axhibited at th meeting of the Auckland institute recently, were rv large number of '>..ne a ■,< : j extinct gigantic moa of /•••d-uid. A greater amount of interest thiu or.hr.ary attaches to these bones from the fact of their being the tirst discovered in the Xorth Island. . The fact is instructive, :."5 shewing that the habitat of the moa extended further North than had been supposed. They were found in a deposit ill Wangarei. They will, no doubt, form the subject of some future to be read before the members of the Institute.
