LEASE OF TOLLS, &c.

The leases of tolls, &e., for a perioil of six months, were sold by auction ">u June 23, by Messrs. B. TonksandCo., for ami on behalf of the Provincial Government. The attendance was numerous, and there was a fair amount of competition. The leases sold as follows: —The fees leviable at the public slaughter-house, Xewmarket, for £7'J per month : F. G. Clayton, purchaser. The tolls leviable at the Paumure bridge, for £17 ."is per month: J. A. llyarth, purchaser. The tolls leviable at the toll-gate on the Great .South Uoad, at its propos-it new site near the J unction Hotel, together with Seccombe's Uoad chain bars, &c.—i.'t>s per month : M. McGarry, purchaser. The tollhouse at Xewmarkct, together with the fees leviable at the Xewmarket weighbridge—£s 7s ti'l per month : Thomas l.upton, purchaser. The tolls leviable at the o—hahu and Slippery Creek toll-gates, Great South Iluad —£(>2 per month : Thomas Stringer,, purchaser. The tolls leviable at the Archill toll-gate, Great North Uoad—£lj 10s per month : Win. Kirby, purchaser. The tolls leviable at the .Mount lvlen Uoad t-U gate, i at its proposed new site at the junction of the Gaol Uoad, and at the Gaol Uoad chainbar ; together with the royalty leviable for scoria ash, &c., taken from the gravel-pit on the Mount Kd *r> Uoad Ueserve—£sl per month :J. McSh.me, purchaser. The fees chargeable for the supply of water to the shipping—£3s per month : A.S.I'. Co., purchasers. The fees chargeable at the Onehunga Wharf—£Ss per month : A. Barnes, purchaser. The total amount realised for the leases which were sold at the prices quoted above is £415 2s <>1. In consequence of several alterations having been made in the positions of the toll-gate.-, it is difficult to give a correct average of the amount obtained for the leases, as compared to the previous half-year. Some of them were sold at an increased value, and others again suffered a corresponding depreciation. The same lirm also sold on behalf of the Board of Education, a seven years lease of the Exchange Hotel, Parnell, and the adjacent property —a shop and dwelling-house fronting the Manukau Road, and two cottages at the back. The whole of the property was sold for £240 per year. Mrs. llale, the present occupier of the Exchange Hotel, was the purchaser.

The lease of the Auckland Market House for one year, commencing on the Ist of July, was Eold by public auction by Mr. I!. Arthur at neon, on June IS. The lease u:is sold for £73 per month, and Mr. R. C\ Greenwood, the original lessee, was the purchaser. Last year the lease of the same property sold for £41, shewing an increase for this year of S3 per cent on the previous rental.
