THE UNPROTECTED STATE OF TAUPIRI.
MEETING OF THE SETrLERS.
[VROM. OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] May 21. At an important public nifeting of residents at Taupiri and neighbourhood, held at Mr. Brown's residence, for tho purpose of taking into consideration their unprotected situation, should any decisive measures bo adopted for recovery of Purukutu and Sullivan's murders, it was suggested that the commandant of the forces iu tho Waikato should be requested to supply the settlers with arms and ammunition, they being entirely destitute of any means of protecting thomselves. Finally, it was resolved that a committee be formed to draw up a petition, praying tho commandant of the forces, Colonel Lyon, to placo a guard upon the bridge over the Komokorou at its confluence with the Waikato river, as the Komokorou may bo considered one of the high roads into the heart of tho Hauhau country. That serious measures aro premeditated by the natives upon the settlers residing upon the banks of the Waikato and Komokorou rivers, is evident from tho fact of natives disposing of j all their produce.
