THE GOLDFIELDS.

[FEOII OtTE OWN COBKESrONDENTS.]

Thames, Thursday. At.BURN'IA. —In accordance with instructions from the directors, the manager intends to clean up fortnightly for the future, so that on Saturday a return of gold may be looked for; but this will be only of a moderate character, considerably under 200 ozs. This is not to lie wondered at, as the first week or ten days of the month is chiefly devoted to dead-work and timbering, so that the total crushing of this fortnight will not exceed nine days. Tbe specimen leader, at the bottom of the winze, was only taken in hand yesterday, so that the ensuing fortnight will receive tho benefit of what mav be got from here. As yet no specimens havo been grassed. The leader where it is now in hand varies considerably in Bize, owing to being closc to the junction with tho dropper from the main lodo, and as a lot of veins connect the two, 110 less than ten feet of dirt is broken away. The manager also intends to open out anothor block of ground upon this leader, and that is where it was first intersected by the adit. Although small in size, yet it is very patchy, and I think th \t the largo block of ground that lies beliv -n the point of intersection and tiiut portion Rtoped out further ahead, should turn out line payable grouud. The general stuff of the last few days is coming from the rise at the end of the main drive, which rise has commuuicated with tho level above; and also from a large block of ground stiil higher than the intermediate level. In these blocks of ground tl, sre is a very large amount of work beforehand, aud as tho slopes In ur.i.-li block show a good strong lode, tin l quality of which is better than usual, it is evident "that some good general crushings may be looked forward to for some time. There is also another block of ground in hand above the intermediate level, close to tile old Success workings, which shapes to turn out well, especially die hanging-wall branch ; and when this is fairly in hand, with the other blocks r-peciGed above, I anticipate better (Feneral crushings than usual. Iu the crosscut through the foolwall of the Star of the South lode, water has been tapped, and also several small vein», so that it is evident that ihe Carpenters, aud other leaders, are 110 great distance away. Oi.d Wjiait.— Very littlo progress ha 3 been made with the rise in tho low tunnel since my last report, chiefly owing to bad air, but this is now overcome, as air-pipes havo been carried to the very fnco. There is a body of sumo over three feet wide in the face"; but us it contains a little sandstone iu the centre, the average size of it may bo set down at two feet. The whole of tho quartz j stored in tho 113 feet level will be sent through to tho mill, and other important works necessary for the development of tbe mine will be undertaken. Coromandel, Thursday. Tiki.—Another New Find. —Following closely 011 the footsteps of tho Waikoromiko find comes one iu the Tike district. It soems that for some eleven months past the two brothers Snell have been prospecting at the Tiki, from the foot of tho ranges upwards, and have traced gold for over a mile up to what was, until within the last few days, the Treasury lease. At tho same time, aud unknown to many, two other brothers named McDonnell luive been working for somo ten months in the Challenger ground, next to the Treasury, and they havo opened out a lodo in the ground whijh is what is now termed the " new find." Theso men have, of course, been backed up iu their prospecting by several persons living here, and who now noom to be about reaping tho reward of their labours. They lmve in hand a lode which is five feet thick in tho face, being very s«lid, aud which carries gold iu nood"quantities all through, from wall to wall, as a good prospect can be crushed frjm apportion of the lode at all depths. The main drive is situated on the road, and so a good tra.-k is open right down to the Emily batterv; and at a small expense a tramway and shoot could be made down to it, and stone put through at a small expense. The Snells and McDonnells have taken up the old Treasury lease between them, having divided it. i» preference to going to auction and bidding ag»inet one another, each having now obtained what they wanted. It looks, however, as if a new era was about to Start ill the Tiki, as besides these two claims there are several others already at work. The | Emily is about to crush, most of the stone being" now *t the battery. The Flower of the llill'was bought the other day at auction, and a number of shareholders havo f irmcd a pri-

vuto company, and are about to start to work at once, having altered tho name of the claim to the Native Chief. Tho Pride of tho Tiki has also been taken up, and one or two other leases which are not yet named. After all, I think there will be no necessity at all to shift tho Emily battery, as the Challenger reef alone would keep the whole lot of stampers going with tho greatest of ease, the lodo never having been less than tlireo feet thiok since it was opened up.
