BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The usual fortnightly meoting of the Board was held yesterday afternoon, at. the office of the Board, Wyndham-street. Present: Dr. Campbell (in the chair), and Messrs. A. Clark, H. H. Lusk, A. Bevoridgo, P. A. Philips, W. J. Hurst, and Colonel Haultain. Tho minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The following business was afterwards transacted The appoiutmcnt of

an assistant toucher at Opaheko, at a salary of ' £50 a-ycar, was agreed to. Application from Tuakau, for proclamation of district with new boundaries ; also, that another day might be fixed for the election of committee, was considered. It was resolved that the time could not be altered. —Application from Waiota'ii for a grunt to separate the pluy-ground of the boys and girls. Postponed.—Appointment of junior teacher at Auckland West No. 2 School approved of. —Appointment of Mr. Krippner agreed to as a teacher at the Wade; abo a grant of £10.—On the motion of Mr Lusk, the following resolution was carried, " That this Board is of opinion tbat with a view to efficiency and economy it is dosirable to avoid as far as possible the keeping up or establishing of a number of small schools having teachers receiving very low salaries. That this Board will, therefore, promote the establishment. of half timo schools in localities where these schools may be deomed Buitablo, ' such schools to be taught at alternate periods, as may be approved of by the Inspector. —A letter of the Rev. Mr. Hill, in reference to using a school at the Thames was referred . to the district school committee, —the committee to be informed that the Board call i their nttenLion to clause 45, and hope that L the committee will do all they can to carry ' out ihu spirit of the clause, and so assist

clergymen of all denominations in giving religious instruction out of school hours.—ln reference to the Grammar School a report was brought up. The Board are willing to give the Grammar School a site in Symondsstreet, comprising two acres, for a site of equal value in the Albert Barracks, with the material of the magazine, and the use of the present school for two years at a mnder>> f e rent. —The Inspector stated that application had been made to him from many quarters for the establishment of night-schools in the city and suburbs. The Board authorised further enquiries to bo made on the subject.— It was stated that application had been made for the establishment of two additional schools in the City East. —The Inspector recommended that if the application was granted the compulsory clause of the Act should be brought into operation.—The question was postponed. —On the motion of Mr. Clark, seconded by Mr. Hurst, the following resolution was agreed to :—" Having regard to the rules of the Board with reference to the appointment of teachers, committees should be required, when asking the Board to sanction the appointment of any teacher, to furnish a list of the candidates for such appointment. That the teachers, when appointed, should not commence their duties, as a rule, until their appointments are confirmed by the Board. That school committees should be required, previous to making any appointment, to ask tho Board to supply them with a list of certificated tciehers seeking employment in tho province."—The Board declined to purchase the church at Mullet Point, Matakana, with a view to its removal, to be used for tho purposes of a school-house. — The Board recommended a half-time school between Upper and Loner Matakana. —Tho teacher recently appointed at Woodvillo was approved of, and £15 was granted towards repairing his house.—The teacher at Tararu appealed against his dismissal. Appeal not entertained.— The Key. Mr. Taylor suggested a training school for teachers. He offered his services and part of the Auckland College for the purpose. Proposition not entertained at present.—The Board declined to grant £65 to Pukekohe West.—The teacher at Pokeno was approved of.—lt was resolved to proclaim school boundaries at Kaukapakapa. Two half-time schools

will be established between this place and Wainui.—£6o was granted to the Titirangi school district for school purposes, the district to find £40. —£50 was granted towards building a school at Parawai, the district to pay the balance. —The appointment of a teacher was sanctioned for Tararu, and £20 granted for rent and maps.—An application from the Corouiandcl committee, asking to separate the Upper from the Lower district., was referred to a committee to report upon. Several applications in reference to St. Paul's school were ordered to stand orer.—Application from Ngaruawahia for assistance, deterred for fuller information.—The sum of £25 was granted to City West, No. 2, for certain fittings to school-house. —£20 wa» granted to tho Otahuhu district, for certain finings for a school which is to be held at the public hall. —The appointment of a teacher at North Rivor, Waipu, was confirmed. -It was reBolved to ask for further information before proclaiming tho Manukau Heads under the Act. —An application, in reference to building a school-house at Port. Albert was ordered to stand over.—The Board declined to interfere with the boundaries of this district.—A letter from Colonel Russell, proposing to recommend the General Government to take oyer the Pukepoto school, if the Board contributed the balance of £25 promised towards tho building, was approved of.—Application from Coromandel to spend £30 lor fittings for schools in tJpper and Lower Townships; granted.—Tbe question of a new school at To Aral, in a more central situation, was order to stand over for further information.— It was agreed to create Omaha a school district.—Letter from Mr. Tnvlor, offering to place the jun'or department of his school — numbering 190 boys — under the Board. Question deferred. — The Board declined to grant the appointment of ati assistant, male teacher for Kauwa.-ranga. —The question of establishing an additional school at Hamilton East was referred to the District Committee.

—Request for a grant to put up r. schoolhouse at Hamilton WesL was deferred for fuller information. —A similar request, in reference to two schools at Wangarei, also deferred. — Some other unimportant, business was transacted, after whicti the Bjard adjourned.
