THE NORTHERN ELECTION.

To the Editor of the New Zealand Herald. Sih,—During the last two days some very damaging reports against Major Cooper have been circulated, which, if true, would render his return as a member for the Northern Division iti tho General Assembly most undesirable. 11 is said that hie conduct at Wanganui in. the year 1861 is such as to render him most unfitting as an Auckland member. Indeed, I am told that if returned he will not be listened to with ordinary respect by Southern men, as having forfeited by some net the position which a member of tho Assembly should hold. If sueli really bo the case, it is due to the electors that Major Cooper should withdraw from the contest, as it would be folly on our part, when the utmost weight that Auckland can bring to bear in the Assembly is required, to send as one of mir members a gentleman whose presence would rather retard than advance our interests. On the Other hand, il those rumours have no foundation, it is due to Major Looper that they should bo set at rest.—l am., &e. An Elector of the Northern Division. Auckland, June 25th. [The matter to which our correspondent alludes is the charge marie in the Assembly in 1861, against Major Cooper, then holding a high commission at Wanganui, of abducting a native girl of tender year 3. On the 13th of June, 1861, it was resolved on the motion of Mr. Fox, (hit the report of Mr. Halse on this matter be laid on the tabl«. The papers so called for were laid on the table of the House by Mr. Stafford on the 21st of the same month, and the result is well known.—Ed.N.Z.H.]
