THE CROSS AND RETRENCHMENT.
To the Editor of the New Zealand Herald. g IB Considering that the Governor, Mr. Stafford 'and other high functionaries, usually shape their course of action from tbe councils and suggestions of the Gross —at least the Kditor of that paper always tells his readers that they have done so, when ho announces any new political action of theirs which is likely to he popular—l am puzzled to find, by the proceedings of yesterday's and today's Council, that the Superintendent, Executive, and Council, have one and all been So little influenced by his leadingarticleon Retrenchment which appeared in the Cross of the 12th instant. The article was a very exhaustive one, pointing out what alterations should be made and what savings effected; what public, officers should be retained, and what knocked on the head. Still, Government and Legislature have both paid no heed whatever to the suggestions of your cotemporary. Is it, I would ask, that a prophet has no honor in his own country—orthat the journal in question is too wild and erratic to curry any weight with those who know it best—the Auckland public ?—I i Auckland, June 25. Ex-trumpetee.
