ATTEMPTED MURDER IN OTAGO.
A murderous assault has been committed at Tuapeka upon a man named Benjamin Harbord, miner, by a Chinese man, named Sing Fair, who has been arrested. Harbord was attacked while sleeping in his tent, and grappled his assailant; lie was severely injured in tho scuffle. The assailant Chinese axe handle, which was subsequently found in the tent. Harbord's jaw was fractured, his neck cut to the spine, and face and nose smashed. The man is injured fearfully, and his life is considered in imminent danger. This affair has caused great excitement amongst the Tuapeka miners; a public meeting has been held, and resolutions passed to the effect that if the perpetrator of the deed was not given up against noon on Friday, the Europeans would expel all Chinese from the neighbourhood. Notice has been given of this intent to the Chinese. No riotous proceedings are feared. The Chinese have subscribed £200, and offer reward for the apprehension of the assailant. Mr. -Richmond, for the Colonial Secretary, offered a reward of £100. The Commissioner of Police and two detectives started for the scene of the outrage.
