THE COMING SESSION.
To tho Editor of the New Zealand Herj.i.d. Silt, —Tho meeting of the General Assembly is closo at hand : are our representatives prepared for tho struggle ? Are their votes to be depended on for Separation ? Eetrenohment is said to bo an absolute necessity; are they prepared to make it a reality ? or is it all to 'end in smoke ? Are they determined to curtail the overgrown General Government establishments, and to reduce them to reasonable dimensions ? This is not to bo done without a struggle. Placeman cannot be expected to y.eld on demand. But .1 minority numbering fourteen ought to be able to do a great deal if their cards are well played. Are they ready to demand that the administration of all the lands in this province shall be vested in the Provincial Government of Auckland, as is the case in all the other provinces ? That only " one land department," instead of three, as at present, shall be maintained in this province. That on Maori matters similar powers to those held by Mr. McLean on the South-east coast be conferred on some one in Auckland (and that person ought to be a member of the General Executive). Are they prepared to assist the Otago members in bringing the Stafl'ojd ministry to book? Will they be " stupid enough" to join Auckland's greatest enemies, and so repeat the greatest blunder mado by the Aucklanders in 1861. Will they " vote" away tho money expended in buying off opposition members, and that spent on futile attempts to appear large, in ambassadors' robea, at postal conferences and such like. Will they compel such an alteration in our theoretical Hesponsible Government as to make it mora like a reality, by compelling every member accepting office to vacate his seat and allow his constituents to have a voice about his conduct. Those and many other qnestinns, our representatives ought to be ready to answar by their votes. We need honest government, and such an alteration in our General Government as will leave a much larger share of the public revenue to the province.— Yours, &c., _ Newton, June 24, 1567._ Electob.
