EARTH CLOSETS.

To the Editor of the jSTnw Zealasd Hebatd. Sib, —1 take this opportunity of writing a word in reply to your correspondent "5.," and a)so to bear testimony that a wholesome arid economical reform can be effected in the domestic economy of many habitations at very small coat. About three weeks ago, I transformed a stinking cesspool on my premises, into a sweet and wholesome earth closet, by filling up the excavation,or pit (by the bye a useless piece of unnecessary labour in the first instance) with earth until level with tho surface of the ground, thereby expelling the offensive liquid, caused by the water drainage, and doing away Vvith nuisance. I thenplaced abox under the seat, filled with about three inches of mould, and the result is, tLat this " Englishman's institution," is as sweet as a nut. An occasional sprinkling of earth, and the box supplied before it gets too heavy, is all the attention required to keep this department a source of cleapliness and profit in the shape of garden manure. To keep yoar earth dry this wet season of the year build a small shed attached to the closet like a fowl house, and those that tiy the experiment will feel surprised at the system not being more generally adopted. J. c. w. June 21, 1567. P.S.—The other questions you, Mr. Editor, have answered yourself.
