CAMP TE AWAMUTU.

fFIIOM OUE OWX COEKESI'ON'DEKT.] July 2S

According to notification, as stated in my last despatch, tho whole of the Commissariat bullocks, dravs, harness, etc, , were put up to auction. The auctioneer was Mr. Alfred ttuckhind. Tho business of the day commenced shortly after 12 o'clock noon, and terminated at about haif-pa=t 2 o'clock p.m. Tho principal purchasers were -Messrs. Banks and Sparrow, contractors. There were a threat many people from Auckland and tho surrounding: military settlements extended the sale. The average price per head for bullocks was £14. Mr. Banks purchased a great number of tho drays, some of the militia becoming purchasers. Bidding was pretty brisk . indeed, as is usually the case, tho strongest in pocket had it all thoir own way. I should have felt more than happv had tho Government ha l them put up in .-mall lots, so as to allow the military settlors to have a chance of netting complete teams to enable them to work their farm'. Had it been so, Government would indeed have assisted the military settlers. A sreat number from Alexandra and Ivihikihi attended I also noticed several of the German settlers from Ohaupo. This proves that the men located on their lands intend to stick to them and do harness ; but 1 am sorry to see that they are not getting that encouragement from tile Government which the\ to well deserved for past neglect All those townships above-mentioned are rapidly improving. Houses are springing up dailv and land fenced in to a great extent. In a few years this bids fur to become a most prosperous district; the lanu is goid, and tho townships beautifully situated. Another hotel lias been opened at Alexandra, by fc-rgcant He.vwooi, W.M., who gave a sumptuous bupper to his friends on the occasion. Trie hotel al-o affords accommodation for boarders. Wo wish the gallant sergeant every success in the entorpiise Serjeant Hey wood has served ti long time in lI.M. llth and 30th Regiments, and as a non-commissioned officer in each.
