NGAHIN A POURI.

[feo>e our owx corbespondent.] July 29. The steamer Moutoa passed here last night on her upward trip to Te '<ore and Alexandra, having on board 60 of the Ist Waikato Militia, 350 of whom, I believe, are intended to garrison the va ions redoubts on the frontiers of the Waikato uri'il the military settlers of Alexandra, Hamilton, (. ambridge, and Harapipi are permanently located on their lauds. The number adotred for Harapipi is thirty, which, with the number already stationed there, will be epiite a>, qunte for its defence. Another party of the l?t Waikatos is at Ngiruawaliia, and will, it is understood. be forwarded to their destinations as soon as possible. Whether the companies of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Waikato regiments at present maintained on pay will be struck off or not, in consequence of th accession to the defensive force in the Waikato by the arrival of that portion of the Ist Waikaro reg; ■ ent detached from Tauranga, 1 am unable to say but as retrenchment seems to bo the policy of the Wei 1 Ministry, and tills temporary removal of a portion of the Ist'Waikatos is a step in that direction, I should not bo at all surprised if the pr tcction of the frontier bo entrusted to the . Ist Waikato-, who, like the Israelites, appear to have been doomed to lead a nomadic life for some time ere they come into pos-se-eion of th> "promised land.' If the Tmpe.ml troops be employed in the manner lndi 'n!.- . oy Jlr. Card well (reserved for emergencie-), it may ba questioned whether the Waikato military settlers, m the state of disorganization consequent upon virtual disbanduient, will not be ab.-oluteJy at the mercy of the natives, who with their innate cunning and astuteness, m ay bo only awaiting the time when the Imperial troops shall bo wholly wiihdrawn from the Waikato, to renew the war with their commissariat improve i and their ranks reci uited by the development the /;«' mairirc f maticism. The Weld Ministry have some orignal and uni me ideas of military settlement, one of which is that 350 men will be sutheient to protect a fro tier exteiumg some eighty miles fiom the nroads of savages.
