MAIL FROM THE SOUTH.

Tub principal items of news by tbe Wellington is the account of a large conflgrntion in Dunedin. Thirty-three bouses and shops were destroyed. The loss is estimated at from £15,000 to £20,000. The Daily Times says that tbe fire was attributable to tbe neglect or intoxication of the man employed as cook in the Caledonian Hotel. From Taranaki we learn that Major Richardson has accepted the invitation of the electors of tbe town of New Plymouth to allow himself to be placed in nomination as their representative in the General Assembly. There is no news from Wellington or Nelson, and little from Canterbury. We learn that Messrs. 11. Sewell and A. E. Hargreaves are nominated for Lyttelton, and that Mr. Sewell lias been beaten. He is most unpopular in Canterbury. A Wellington paper says that Mr. Sewell, chagrined at the result of the election, has taken bis passage in the 1 Wild Duck ’ for England.
