SHIPPING COMPANIES.
STRONGLY CRITICISED BY RAILWAYMEN. MR HERBIES AND RAILWAYMEN, (Per Press .Assonintion.) NAPIER, November 10. A strong criticism was levelled against various shipping companies in the Dominion by Mr J. Vigor Brown at a kit-giving ceremony ift the Napier Municipal Theatre last night, Remarking on the huge-profits-and exorbitant charges, made by shipping companies, Mr Brown instances scheelite, which before the war was carried to Germany for 30/- a ton. Scheelite is used in shell manufacture, and now that Britain wanted it they were charged 120/a ton, Wool was urgently needed for makhig uniforms,• and was charged 2|jd to "}d a lb, while before the war the was, j(d ;a Jb, .."This has got to be stopped," said Mr Brown, "If anyone makes money out of our bleeding boys killed oil the battlefield they ought to be hanged." Mr Brown also read a letter from Mr Herries refusing time off for railway employees playing in the regimental band and wishing to take part in the farewell to flic troops, Leave was only allowed without pay. A motion was passed which condemned Mr Herries. Dr McNab, who was present, said that Mr Herries's action was indefensible.
