At the Police Court to-day John Evans was charged with driving a true turn ungino along a road without having men travelling in front and rear of iho engine to prevent accidents. Tho dofenco was thai when a horso approached tho defendant always stopped the online,, itnd his assistant, if necessary, led tho horso past. A quantity of evidence was given to show that this practice advocated tho necessity of having men in front and roir of tho engine. Tho Magistrate said the Act had not been complied will, and ho was bound to con* vict, but at tho tequest of defendants counsel made tho fiuo L 5 Is to enable an appeal to tho Supremo Court. Mr T. 11. Anson, an old settlor, formerly chairman of the Kducation Board, died last night from pleurisy.
