NAPIER. January 1.
Yesterday afternoon a presentation was made to the ex-Mayor of Napier, Mr Robert Stuart, on his retirement from the office of Mayor, which lie had held for the last four years. The presentation consisted of an exceedingly handsome drawing-room clock in ormulu and alabaster, costing L4O, and was made by the present Mayor, Councillors, exCouncillors, and officers of the Corporation. In the front there is an inscription on a silver plate. The presentation was acknowledged by Mr Stuart in feeling and suitable terms. Last night the New Year was ushered in with a grand display of fireworks from the Fire Brigade tower. Th«re was also a midnight semi- choral service at St. John's Anglican Church. To-day was as usual strictly observed as a holiday. There were sports at Farndon and Kopua, and horse races at Kaikoura, Pakipaki, Tekapu, and Petane. The weather was gloriously fine, and not too warm. The country is getting parched for the want of rain.
